Dental Bridges

What are Dental Bridges?

Dental bridges are for filling a gap created by a missing tooth (or teeth).

Why should I replace missing teeth?

To create a good looking healty smile.
A gap left by a missing tooth can mean greater strain on the teeth at either side. This means your bite is affected, because the teeth next to the space can lean into the gap and alter the way the upper and lower teeth bite together. This can then lead to food getting packed into the gap, which causes both decay and gum disease.

How are missing teeth replaced?

There are two main ways to replace the missing teeth.
A fixed bridge.
Or with implantation.

Can I always have a bridge to replace missing teeth?

Yes, if you have enough strong teeth with good bone support you can have a fixed bridge held by your own teeth. If your teeth arent strong enough with good bone support your other choice is implantation.

Advantages of Bridges

Strong, therefore ideal for biting and chewing.

Disadvantages of Bridges

The preparation of the tooth is an irreversible treatment. A certain amount of healthy tooth enamal has to be removed in preparing the tooth for the crown.

What are the materials used to make Dental Bridges?

Porcelain bonded to gold: It appears that this would be the most expensive option, however this is the cheapest. This can be used everywhere in the mouth, best used on Molars as it is very strong but does not have the most natural appearance.
Porcelain and composite: Not as strong as bonded crowns, but they can look very natural and are most often used for front teeth.
Zirconium: Look very natural and are used on both front and back teeth as is very strong but has the best astheic appearance.
